Building a Pipeline Expansion Journey
Last updated: October 12, 2026
The goal of an expansion journey is to deepen product adoption, grow contract value, and/or strengthen customer retention. Start by targeting contacts at current customer accounts, keeping your products top of mind and helping customers get more value from what they already have. Use contact-level intent to spot new interests, identify cross-sell opportunities, and alert Sales when someone may be ready for a conversation about something new. For accounts with open expansion opportunities, reinforce Sales outreach with relevant ads to help turn interest into additional pipeline—before a competitor gets there first.
The journey at a glance

Adoption stage
A note on content: variety matters more here. When a prospect sees your brand ad for the fourth time, you’re building familiarity. When a customer sees it for the fourth time, you’re repeating what they may already know. Rotate creatives more frequently and keep the content genuinely useful.
Step | Suggested ad content | Condition to move here |
Adoption | Features in the product the customer already pays for, or educational content on how to get more out of the platform. ![]() | — (entry step), plus a loop (Target has spent 21 days on the last step). Contacts from the cohort that don't meet any other stages' criteria start here. The loop sends prospects back to the top if they make it through the full stage without engaging. Why the loop matters: without it, prospects who never click stay with your last creative indefinitely. The loop sends them back to the top of the rotation. Refresh the creatives in this stage every six to nine weeks to keep content fresh. |
Expansion | Expose customers to other products you offer. Promote a recent product launch or expose new use cases — introductory, not a hard pitch. ![]() | Target ad impressions = 20, or 1 click Set a slightly higher threshold for ad engagement or exposure with existing customers than with prospects. The goal is to support product adoption and customer success first, while creating natural opportunities for expansion. |
Product/feature interest stage
When a customer shows interest in a product, feature, or package they don’t yet own—through ad engagement or a detected intent signal—move them into a dedicated stage focused on that offering.
Step | Suggested ad content | Condition to move here |
Product depth | Rotate creatives that illustrate what this specific product does and the problem it solves. ![]() | Target Interests = that product's topic, last 30 days |
Peer proof | Shift to content that highlights how other customers have used the product or feature to achieve meaningful results. ![]() | Days since first impression = 21, or 1 click |
Expansion opportunity stage
This stage indicates an active expansion or upsell opportunity being worked by Sales or Customer Success. As with the pipeline progression journey, Marketing provides air cover by keeping the buying group engaged and reinforcing Sales messaging across channels to help move the deal forward.
Step | Suggested ad content | Condition to move here |
Expansion Opportunity | Ad content reinforces the same message Sales is using, promoting relevant content that addresses buyer concerns, strengthens the business case, and helps move the deal forward. ![]() | Opportunity stage indicating this is now upsell or expansion pipeline (exact stage name will vary by customer) |
End with a dormant stage: Stop advertising.
Sales & Customer Success Action
Sales and Customer Success should act quickly on new intent and engagement signals to respond to customer needs and identify opportunities for growth.
When customers show interest in adoption-related topics, reach out with relevant guidance and resources to help them get the most out of their existing products and maintain high satisfaction. When signals point to a potential expansion opportunity, follow up with relevant messaging while that interest is still top of mind, and consider reaching out to the extended buying group to uncover additional needs to build broader support for the opportunity.
Marketing supports both efforts by reinforcing helpful content and relevant messaging across channels.
